Vintage Bow Machine

Back in the early 1960s, my father (Richard Brown) designed the bow machine shown here (not for sale, sorry) while living in La Habra, California, and working in a machine shop. This is still housed in the original wood case.

This particular machine is stamped Patent Applied For and TR-4N 515. Texlon Corporation out Dallas, Texas (who supplied the Tex-Sheen ribbon used with this machine) applied for the patent.

My grandmother, Olga, made the bow umbrella
using this machine back in 1969 for a friend's shower.

Vintage Photographs

Old photographs of years gone by are still popular even in today's digital world. I started my first album when I was about 6 years old. I was very fortunate that my grandmother shared many of her photos with me in later years. I now have numerous albums filled with my own memories and a wonderful record of family history dating back to the late 1880s with my Slovenian great-grandmother.

Exciting News

I was recently contacted by NBC for information on purchasing a Turkish doll on my site. I shipped it out FedEx overnight. It's scheduled for the Law & Order's first new episode of the fall season. Apparently, they are introducing a new character and the doll ties into the story. I've heard that the character Jack McCoy (actor Sam Waterston) is moving into Arthur Branch's job (actor and former Senator Fred Thompson) now that Thompson is out campaigning.

I already have the TIVO set on Season Pass as I enjoy the Law & Order series and their spin-offs. It should be fun looking out for my doll.

(UPDATE: December 19th: The latest word is that Law & Order's new season premiere will be January 2nd, 2008)

Jigsaw Puzzles

I have loved the challenge of jigsaw puzzles ever since I was a child. My favorite was a 5,000-piece beauty depicting stained glass patterns. Besides the relaxation puzzles offer (especially when there isn't a thing to watch on the ole television), jigsaw puzzles make for quality time with the kids and/or grandkids. I have my favorite completed puzzles glued and displayed on the walls in my laundry room. James Dean, serene seashore scenes (say THAT one three times fast), fields of flowers, assorted marbles - they make me smile each time I see them.

I was hooked on Ian Fleming's thrillers back in the early 60s. Although the movies never captured the suspense of the books, they were still a lot of fun to watch - and great theme music!!

Finding the classic paperback For Bond Lovers Only was a challenge in LA in the 60s. James Bond fever was everywhere. This Sheldon Lane 1965 paperback gave insight of the famed spy as well as his creator, Ian Fleming. And photographs! Who could forget the seductive Ursula Andress?

I can still remember the greenish-blue MJB coffee tin where my mother stored her large collection of buttons. Cloth buttons, rhinestone buttons, buttons of animals - mom's button can had them all! Even today while shopping at estate sales, auctions, and flea markets, it's amazing how advertising tins can bring back warm childhood memories. An old Planters peanuts canister that dad had in the garage filled with nails or screws; a large Charles Chips can filled with holiday cookies fresh from grandma's kitchen.
